Artificial intelligence in our daily life – Revolution 4.0

The global AI market will grow by $126 billion by 2025. 97% of mobile users are already using AI-powered voice assistants. AI technology can enhance business productivity by up to 40%. 72% of execs believe that AI will be the most significant business advantage of the future. Statistics about artificial intelligence are impressive. The pandemic has accelerated the digital revolution. The impact of AI in our daily lives increased dramatically.

Despite the wide range of applications of artificial intelligence in virtually all areas of life, there is no widely accepted definition of AI. Our vision is mainly a product of pop culture. Some of us identify AI only with robots that resemble human beings. In reality, self-learning algorithms accompany us every day. Uses and applications of artificial intelligence are limited only by human ingenuity and imagination.

My first association with artificial intelligence? Anakin Skywalker’s prosthetic arm. After all, abolishing the limitations of our body has been a dream of mankind for centuries. It turns out that bionic prostheses supported by artificial intelligence algorithms are already a reality, if you want to find out watch this video: A Bionic Leg Powered by A.I. So it’s no wonder that for many of us development of AI brings hope. It has potential to solve the biggest problems of our society.

Some people equate the development of AI with the inevitable collapse of our civilization. Among others, Stephen Hawking warned us about superintelligent machines:

The real risk with AI isn’t malice but competence. A superintelligent AI will be extremely good at accomplishing its goals, and if those goals aren’t aligned with ours, we’re in trouble.

Stephen Hawking

Whether we support the optimistic or the pessimistic view, one thing is clear: Artificial intelligence will not die a natural death, it will stay with us for good. In order to use the technology in a responsiblle way, we need to identify the opportunities, risks, and challenges associated with development of AI. I hope that non-technical section of DS Hacker blog will be helpful in this regard. I will divide it into 3 parts:

Law

We all remember the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Facebook users felt first-hand the dangers of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. However, it turns out that protection of personal data is only one of the many problems connected with AI. As I have already mentioned, it is very difficult to precisely define the term “artificial intelligence”. After all, it is only the basis for further considerations.

Ethics

The ethical foundations of systems based on artificial intelligence invariably raise public questions. Here are just a few examples of questions from the internet: How will artificial intelligence replace humans? Could it be dangerous to us? Is it possible that the algorithm used by the company will be unfair and discriminatory? Does the particular company using the technology have a code of ethics and follow it consistently? Surely, more ethical dilemmas will also arise over time. Trust-based cooperation between humans and artificial intelligence will only be possible after all moral doubts have been resolved.

Business

While many of us were struggling to find answers to the ethical questions around artificial intelligence, some enterpreneurs used new technology to improve their businesses. I’m not just referring to “technology companies”. Artificial intelligence can be applied in every industry. Also small businesses should be interested in the opportunities that AI implementation brings to their own business model.
